Day Eleven - April 11, 2010
STANDING on the mountain... READ 1 KINGS 19: 9-18
While Elijah was on Mt. Sinai the Lord asked, “Elijah, why are you here?” He answered, “Lord God, all powerful, I’ve always done my best to obey you. But your people have broken their solemn promise to you ... and now they are even trying to kill me! “Go and stand on the mountain,” the Lord replied, “I want you to see me when I pass by...”
SPEND A FEW MINUTES IN PRAYER
Just when it seemed that things were winding down the mission continues. You may not only be tired from traveling to Kenya and throughout the land but now you may be weary from doing God’s work on the front lines. In this passage the prophet Elijah has grown weary. He, like the prophet Isaiah, who we read earlier this week, was trying to get the people of God’s attention – trying to get them to return to God. In doing so the people turned on him – they didn’t listen and wanted him dead.
You may be at the point of exhaustion – feeling like nothing you’ve done has made that big of an impact or that the people you’ve witnessed to haven’t listened to the “good news.” But in Elijah’s moment of desperation God appears to him – not in a rushing wind, violent earthquake, or scolding fire BUT in a gentle breeze. The Lord then encourages Elijah to return from whence he came and promises to provide him with a team of like-minded and devoted followers.
God often appears to us in subtle and unexpected ways – like a gentle breeze. Moreover, it is in God’s subtle appearance that Elijah finds the strength to continue what he is called to do. Go back and read over your mission statement from our first devotion. How can you lean on God to help you continue the mission you’ve been called to do?
Spend some time discussing this with your prayer partner. Then record some of the ways God has spoken to or appeared to you over the course of your trip.
HOW HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED GOD ON THIS TRIP?
